SAVAGE PATTY

Ed Skibbe's Music News O'The Week

From Enfuse Magazine

Savage Patty is a Boulder-based band that is a little hard to pin down. They are a jam band in the fine Boulder tradition, but they also are a fine country-rock band. They also cook an interesting stew of blues, rock, soul, folk, jazz, swing, bluegrass and funk. No wonder they call what they do "Mutt Rock". Next to my kids and my mom, my favorite person on earth is a mixed-breed dog named Rusty. I'd be proud to share this extra-fun CD with Rusty.

Songwriter and vocalist Tim Davis has a great way with swingy roots grooves that never lapse into predictability and frequently turn on a dime, with melody that keeps your interest, and with musical compositions that lend themselves to the stellar instrumental breaks contributed by the rest of the band. His baritone voice is reminiscent of Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies--a timbre too seldom heard in music these days. The admittedly low-budget recording sounds great and perfectly captures the band's no-holds-barred jamming synchronicity. It sounds like they were having a blast and did everything in one take. And that's a good thing. Great playing, terrific songs and a virtuoso ensemble sound... I absolutely love this CD! This is Amazing Rhythm Aces, Dixie Dregs, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Section, Asleep at the Wheel territory. It is not commercial-radio friendly, thank el supremo. But give me a hot summer afternoon, a drive with the windows down, and give me a big old dose of Savage Patty. Two thumbs up!
